Spiritual Self-Care

Spiritual Self-Care

Spiritual self-care focuses on fostering a connection to the inner or higher self. These practices do not need to be religious in nature or even need to acknowledge a higher power, though they can. Rather, spiritual self-care is about nurturing and nourishing your spirit, or in other terms, the parts of you that encompass your personality, character, thoughts, feelings, and desires. Spiritual self-care practices are meant to be rejuvenating, energizing, and inspiring.

Yoga

Yoga is a holistic practice that addresses many physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs. The practice fosters non-judgment and acceptance and can help you to connect with your spiritual self.

House of Worship

Attending a house of worship can be a form of spiritual self-care. If you find comfort and connection in a church, temple, or mosque, be sure to carve out time to visit regularly and connect with your spiritual community.

Nature

Many people feel spiritually connected when they spend time in nature. Go hiking or camping, take a walk through a beautiful park, spend some time barefoot in the grass, or spend some time nurturing your garden. Slow down and enjoy the experience with a mindful approach. Feel the sun on your face and the breeze through your hair. Sit under a large tree and be present in those moments.

Meditate and Prayer

Meditation and prayer can be performed anywhere at any time, but having a dedicated meditation or prayer practice can help you to deepen your spirituality. You may choose to create a sacred space in your home specifically for these practices. Spirituality is a deeply personal experience, so decorate your space with objects and items that hold meaning to you. You may want to include religious iconography, singing bowls, or prayer beads. You may also wish to set up a comfortable chair, cushion, or rug to sit on and set up lighting that leads to a contemplative atmosphere.

Cleanse Your Space

Removing negative and unwanted energy from your space and from yourself can be a form of spiritual self-care. Many religious practices use a form of blessed or sacred water or oil or herbal smoke to purify a space or person. Taking a ritual bath or shower can be a cleansing experience. When bathing, imagine that the water is pulling all negative energy from your body and rinsing it down the drain. Once that negativity is gone, imagine the water pouring a warm, healing light over your entire body and soaking in. Use your imagination and intent to shift your energy, attitudes, and feelings.

Music and Dance

Music is said to be the language of the soul. Music can bring us to tears or fill us with ecstatic joy. Spend time listening to music that sends shivers down your spine and raises the hair on your arms. Let yourself sway and dance, no matter how silly you may feel. By allowing yourself to freely move and connect with the music, you may be able to tap into your spirit and find a deeper connection. Challenge thoughts of self-judgment and step into the moment with an open mind and heart.
